EXODUS (A Play in Review)

Adapted and Directed by Mr. Dan Kpodoh, Exodus did not fall short of the mixture of beautiful songs and amazing interpretation.

‘Exodus’ which took place at the Arena Event Centre in G.R.A, Port Harcourt is a tale of anger and disunity amongst three brothers: Jagunlabi; Selfish, angry and distrustful, Jaguno; Stubborn, careless and vain, Jengboro; Cowardly and gossipy. It took the audience into the ancient Yoruba setting with traditions and gods and their beliefs which was exciting and educating.

The actors were very great at interpreting their roles. I was particularly impressed with Mercy Aghedo, (Oyin, Jagunlabi’s wife, because of her ever beautiful voice and interpretation of her role) and Alfred Fadar Otite (Jengboro) because he provided most of the comic relief which got the audience rolling with laughter.

The Set design, carvings and costume was very creative and indigenous to the Yoruba. The make-up was average but then the beauty of the play can make one over look them. The lighting was on point but I felt the sound and back-up singers could have done better, as they were shaky at some times.

The play was wonderfully directed unsurprisingly but getting to see actors run out through the corners was not so nice to see. The venue did not help as it isn’t the best for plays as necks were strained and certain seat positions could not see the play properly.

I would really love to see plays by Mr Dan Kpodoh become a monthly ritual in the city of Port Harcourt. It is always filled with harmony and wonderful interpretation.
